What is Cordyceps?
Cordyceps sinensis originates from the Tibetan highlands. In the wild, this fungus attacks a certain type of caterpillar underground, uses it as food, and then sprouts a small club-shaped fruiting body in early spring. That is also where it gets its English name: the Chinese caterpillar fungus.
Wild Cordyceps is extremely rare and expensive. In luxury stores in China, prices range from about $40,000/kg to over $100,000/kg for the best specimens. So outside of Asia, it is basically impossible to sell naturally grown Cordyceps. After years of research, scientists managed to isolate a mycelium strain from the wild mushroom and propagate it using a special fermentation technique. Scientific studies have shown that the chemical composition of CS-4 is so
Traditional use
Cordyceps has been a staple in traditional Chinese medicine and Tibetan folk medicine for generations. It is widely used by athletes in Asia for its traditional association with energy and endurance. The mushroom has also been traditionally used as a tonic against exhaustion and for promoting physical and mental vitality. Traditional practitioners often combine Cordyceps with Reishi to support the overall constitution.
