What is Chaga?
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) doesn't look like a regular mushroom at all. Instead of a cap and stem, it forms a hard, dark growth, almost like a lump of charcoal, on the trunks of birch trees, where it develops slowly over many years. It is found naturally in the forests of Russia, Poland, Scandinavia, Canada, Japan, and parts of China. The most popular traditional use among local populations is a tea brewed from its coarse chunks, a practice with deep roots in Siberia, Finland, and the Baltic States where it has been consumed for centuries.
The key bioactive compounds in Chaga include beta-glucans, betulinic acid, and melanin, along with minerals such as potassium, sodium, and manganese. The betulinic acid is particularly interesting, it is derived from the birch bark on which the mushroom grows, which is why wild-harvested Chaga from birch trees is considered especially valuable compared to cultivated alternatives.
Wild-harvested from birch
Unlike most of our mushroom extracts, this Chaga is not farmed. It is one of the mushroom species in our range that we don't cultivate, but instead harvest from natural birch forests in northeast China. Wild harvesting preserves the mushroom's natural growing conditions and allows it to develop its full compound profile, including the birch-derived betulinic acid, over an extended growth period. The organic collection follows current EU regulations.
After harvesting, the Chaga fruiting bodies are ground, pass through metal detection, and are processed via hot water extraction, centrifuging, and spray-drying to produce a concentrated extract with a polysaccharide content standardised at 30%. As with all our mushroom extracts, only pure fruiting body material is used. No mycelium, no grain fillers.
Every batch undergoes strict quality controls, including testing by the independent, state-accredited AGROLAB laboratory group and residue sampling for full traceability from forest to finished product.

Chaga in traditional medicine
Chaga has been used across multiple continents and cultures for centuries. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is considered a valuable general tonic. In Siberia and the Baltic States, communities have brewed Chaga tea as part of their daily wellness traditions for generations. In Scandinavia and Finland, the mushroom has historically been associated with gastrointestinal comfort and wound care support.
Numerous studies have investigated the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties of Chaga's compounds, particularly its beta-glucans, betulinic acid, and melanin, with research also pointing to antioxidant effects. Studies further indicate that the melanin and betulin in Chaga may play a role in skin function and wound healing, though this remains a subject of ongoing research.
Popular traditional combinations include pairing Chaga with Reishi for immune support and protection against free radicals, with Lion's Mane as a combination to promote physical and mental balance, or alongside Reishi and Turkey Tail as an accompanying pairing in traditional complementary use.
