What is Cordyceps?

Cordyceps sinensis originates from the Tibetan highlands. In the wild, this fungus attacks a certain type of caterpillar underground, uses it as food, and then sprouts a small club-shaped fruiting body in early spring. That is also where it gets its English name: the Chinese caterpillar fungus.

Wild cordyceps is extremely rare and expensive. In luxury stores in China, prices range from about $40,000/kg to over $100,000/kg for the best specimens. So outside of Asia, it is basically impossible to sell naturally grown cordyceps. After years of research, scientists managed to isolate a mycelium strain from the wild mushroom and propagate it using a special fermentation technique. Scientific studies have shown that the chemical composition of CS-4 is comparable to the wild cordyceps.

Traditional use

Cordyceps has been a staple in traditional Chinese and Tibetan folk practice for generations. The mushroom has a long tradition of use among athletes in Asia and holds a fixed place in tradition as a general tonic. Traditional practitioners often combine cordyceps with Reishi.

Frequently asked questions about Cordyceps

How do I use this cordyceps supplement?
The recommended daily intake is 1 gram of powder per day (roughly half a teaspoon), mixed into water, juice, a smoothie, or food, preferably in the morning or before physical activity. If you prefer cordyceps capsules, take 2 capsules per day with water. Each capsule contains approximately 0.5 grams of extract.
What is CS-4 and why do you use mycelium?
CS-4 is a mycelium strain that scientists isolated from wild Cordyceps sinensis and propagate through liquid fermentation. Wild cordyceps is extremely rare and sells for up to $100,000 per kilo in China. Studies have shown the chemical composition of CS-4 is comparable to the wild mushroom; it is the globally standard form for cordyceps extracts.
What compounds are in cordyceps extract?
Cordyceps CS-4 contains polysaccharides, beta-glucans, glycoproteins, ergosterol, cordycepin, adenosine, and L-tryptophan, plus vitamins B1, B2, B12, E, and K and minerals such as iron, calcium, and magnesium. The polysaccharide content is standardised at 30%.
Is there caterpillar in this cordyceps extract?
No. In the wild, Cordyceps sinensis grows on a caterpillar species in the Tibetan highlands, but our extract is made from CS-4 mycelium from liquid culture. No insect is involved; the nutrient solution consists of cane sugar, yellow bean powder, glucose, and peptones.
When is the best time to take cordyceps extract?
Traditionally, cordyceps is taken in the morning or before physical activity. That is a traditional usage pattern, not a requirement; pick the moment that fits your routine.
How do I store this extract and how long does it keep?
Store the extract at room temperature, protected from light and humidity, in a tightly closed package. Stored properly, the product keeps for 4 years.
